The two Nice Guys
present
T R A C E R
(c) 1992
Introduction.
-------------
Hello game lovers ! Here's the last shareware game from the two Nice
Guys. Remember those school days when some boring teacher would be lecturing
boring stuff... What was there to do ? There where no IBMs... Well, the two
Nice Guys would pick up a piece of paper, draw a figure (like a house), and
would try to redraw it by lifting the pen from the paper a minimum number of
times. That's what Tracer is all about !
Every time you lift the pen, you have made a "trace". Like in a golf
game, every figure has a par, that is the average number of times that one is
allowed to lift the pen to trace.
For example, we can draw the stair figure in five traces. If we draw
it in four, we get a score of -1, in six of +1, and in five, we are even.
So actually, in this game, having a negative score is great !
The Main Screen.
----------------
When Tracer is started, you'll be presented with a figure. You can
either use the mouse or the keyboard to play Tracer.
The screen is divided in four sections :
I - General info section.
-------------------------
In the top section of the screen, we have information about
the current game.
First of all, the score for this particular game can be seen
at the top left corner. In the top right corner, we can see the
number of moves, that is the number of times we have lifted the pen
for this particular figure.
To the right, we can see a number 1 in a circle. That
indicates that the option "first trace" is on (see Options section).
Otherwise, there will be no icon.
Again to the right, we can see a note of music. That
indicates the the sound option is on.
Otherwise, there will be no icon.
II - The Figure section.
------------------------
In the center of the screen we can see a multitude of little
squares. These are the actual linking points of the figure. The
object of the game is to form a figure by linking these squares in a
certain order. We link two squares by tracing a line between them.
To do that, we must first place the pen into the source square,
point to the destination square, and trace the line.
Using the mouse : To place the pen, press the right button.
To trace the line press the left button.
Using the keyboard : To place the pen, press Enter.
To move the cross cursor to the
destination square use the arrow keys.
To trace the line press the space bar.
We cannot trace over an already existing line, if we try to
do so, we get the error message : "Trace already exists !".
A move is counted when you lift the pen from the last
destination box and place in another box without tracing.
III - The Options section.
--------------------------
In the right side of the screen we can see a small figure.
That is the figure we are trying to draw. A little box under it,
gives us information about the figure.
A) The level of the figure. In the unregistered version
there is only one level. If you send $25 to the two Nice Guys,
you'll get more figures with advanced levels.
B) The name of the figure.
C) The par, that is the average number of moves for the
figure.
D) The number of linking squares for the figure.
E) The number of lines for the figure.
Under the figure box we have the options menu.
First of all we see the word "Options".
Using the mouse : click on the word "Options".
Using the keybord : you dont have to enter in the
option menu to use the options.Just type the letter of
the desired option.(see list of options bellow)
We then get another menu that contains :
A) Dotted lines - this option will help us to draw the
figure by actually drawing it for us, that is by
linking the squares with dotted lines.
Using the mouse : click on the word "Dotted lines".
Using the keyboard : press D.
B) Sound - Toggles the sound option.
Using the mouse : click on the word "Sound".
Using the keyboard : press S.
The sound will be on when you see the note icon on
th upper righ corner of the screen.
C) Best Scores - See the best scores for Tracer.
Using the mouse : click on the word "Best scores".
Using the keyboard : press B.
D) First trace - toggle the first trace option. This
option will draw a line between any two squares of the
figure. Most of the time this actually help us, but
sometimes it can be hazardous. This option will
be valid if we restart the figure or when we
start the next figure.
Using the mouse : click on the word "First trace".
Using the keyboard : press F.
E) Quit to DOS - this option will exit Trace.
Using the mouse : click on the word "Quit to DOS".
Using the keyboard : press Q.
To exit the options menu click the mouse anywhere outside
the options menu box.
Last but not least, we have three fast options.
A) Next figure - To leave the current figure and pass
on to the next one.
*** Warning ***
If you use this option, you won't be able to be in
the top 10 scores.
**********
Using the mouse : click on the little box placed
before the word "Next figure".
Using the keyboard : press N.
B) Restart figure - To abandon the figure and start
it all over again from the beginning.
Using the mouse : click on the little box placed
before the word "Restart figure".
Using the keyboard : press R.
C) New Game - To abandon the current game and start
a new game from the first figure.
Using the mouse : click on the little box placed
before the word "New Game".
Using the keyboard : press G.
IV - The message Box.

where all important messages are to be written.

in a while :
